Did you know that there is an avenue of contemporary dance called “physically integrative dance”?

San Francisco Bay Area’s AXIS Dance Company doesn’t just provide lip service to the phrase “anyone can dance”…they prove it every day.

How do you combat the stereotypes, fear and general discomfort that can surround physical disabilities?

Perhaps with a dance company that places performers with and without disabilities on the same stage together. And then perhaps give those performers choreography that is not about disability…thereby normalizing the presence of “disabled” bodies.

“If art is supposed to change how we think, how we view the world, then credit AXIS Dance Company for a blazing artistic vision.” Sid Smith, Chicago Tribune

What counts as REAL dance?

From the FAQs page on the AXIS Dance Company website:

What were the initial obstacles you had to overcome?
People were confused about whether we were doing ‘art’ or ‘therapy’. There were and continue to be physical access issues in studios and theatres, both for performers and disabled audience. Attitudes are another obstacle as some people still don’t consider what we do to be ‘real’ dance.

So what is a REAL dance company?

I sure hope we would include (and celebrate!) as REAL a dance company with education outreach programs for veterans and healthcare providers….a dance company that offers physically inclusive Dance Jams…a dance company that never turns away dancers for lack of funds…a dance company that actually makes good on the phrase “anyone can dance”…a dance company that teaches children and adults both with and without disabilities that through dance, their hearts and minds can flutter with joy!

I leave you with a video of AXIS’s program Dance Access / KIDS!

Happy Dancing!  ~ Linda
